Bank failures – Netbank
September 29, 2007
It seems that Netbank.com has been shut down by the Feds. Some sort of transfer arrangement is in effect with ING, which is a good company… but I had accounts with Netbank, and this is going to make life more interesting than I usually enjoy.
“No advance notice is given to the public when a financial institution is closed.”
Yes, thank you, Federal Government. We might have tried to protect our assets or something. The horror.
Feels like I should’ve been keeping my money under a pillow. What is this, the 1920s? Crud.
Daze of our Lives, update
September 28, 2007
The apartment management has sent out a general memo about the 17th. They offer the note that no crimes were committed, and there is nothing to worry about… although, it seems, one of the management team died along the way.
Odd information to volunteer, don’t you think? “Police came, no crimes were committed but, oh yes, one of our boys who lived in your apartment complex seems to be dead. No connection. Really! Don’t know why we mentioned it!”
And that was the time that the car careened out of the garage, banged the heck out of the walls, dropped a few pieces, and went galumph-galumph-galumph down the way, with one or more tires blown, and with horns occasionally honking… at about 3am.
It’s all about the boys

I feel somewhat obliged to post a message. I don’t quite have one, though. I have a half-dozen notions boiling around that don’t seem to quite have become soup, yet.
There was that unspeakably beautiful man, at the shop, the other day. I went to check out something on the counter behind him and… erm. He spoke with the kid next to him, in high-pitched Spanish, and I realized that he was a bit undercooked. A boy, not a man. Eeek.
I don’t want to work
September 25, 2007
I just want to bang on the drums all day…
Music. Compelling thing, isn’t it?
There is the sense of smell, linked to the rhinencephelon, or “nose head”. That’s ancient. In a way, the sense of smell ties us all the way back to the dinosaurs. It can revive memories long forgotten, in people who barely have things left to call memories.
I wonder at what point music came in? It seems clear that it must have been before speech. It’s old, it has pull. Hint a song at me, and I may find it haunting me days later.

It appears that there are still a lot of people looking for advice on how to get MoO2, or Master of Orion 2, working under Windows Vista. The bad news is… it seems that you can’t. Microsoft’s latest “fixes” have broken that. You can try DosBox, if you have a DOS version of the game.
Me, I’m still rebuilding my supercomputer. Hell on wheels, without the Hell or wheels, to be sure. Something elegant in a tech toy, though, and– I have to say, when it’s done, it will be running XP. Vista is just a piece of crud. I don’t think I’ll miss it a bit. “Downgrade” now, while you still have the opportunity.
WoW: the scheme of things
September 24, 2007
It’s a nice night out, for a novelty. Getting into the 70s at last, thank goodness. But, that’s not what I’m here to talk about. No, it’s gamers’ night out, tonight.
World of Warcraft.
Let’s talk about the ring of the thing.
You remember when we were young and foolish?
September 22, 2007
Now we’re old and foolish.
Heh. I’ve loved that saying, for some reason, for the better part of 25 years, now. Back in the day, I used to sing, “will you still need me, will you still feed me, when I’m twenty-four.”
That joke has become a little bit less amusing over the decades.
World of Warcraft tips
September 20, 2007
I’d like to have entitled this, “World of Warcraft and the Benefits of a Planned Political Economy” but, that’s a bit long, don’t you think?
WoW is a bit like the real world, in that it has a free market that exists only alongside a bent, centrally-controlled system.
There are auction houses, where you can buy and sell your goods. For any goods that are in demand, at all, this is the place to sell. For goods that are not in demand, you can sell to the official vendors, who will give you some predetermined bad price. Oddly enough, the auction house is also a fine place to pick up bargains, for reasons both good and bad.

What it is?
An interesting enough question as an abstract, don’t you think?
Though even a rather hazy, lazy life such as I’ve been living, lately, has its curious points.
There was the ruckus last night, a bit before 3am, that mystery hour when you can usually count on a special silence to fall upon the world.

Problems with my ISP, right now, and I won’t bore you with them. Instead, a few little toys for your amusement. Someone might as well be having a good time.
Not safe for work. Not safe for children, puppies, or goats. You have been warned.
