A brief foray into the outside world
December 30, 2007
Champagne, nuts, olives, fried chicken and chocolates. I’m not actually a great fan of chocolate but, I seem to have received a lot, this season. I must admit that a “Wow Wee Maui’s Candy Bar” with chocolate and coffee beans is fairly pleasing. http://www.wowweemaui.com …
Quiet pastimes… the luxury of good food and silences. I’ve been reading, and watching movies, and playing a bit of Civ III with the violence dialed way down.
The marketing people would have you believe that Civilization isn’t a war game. Why, you can even win through culture, diplomacy, or science!
Seasoned greetings
December 24, 2007
I was up terribly late, last night, drinking beer and playing World of Warcraft. It was terrific.
I was rather bent when I got up this morning, all too early. Do you know, eggnog is a wonderful way to deal with the morning after? That and, presently, some cold, fried chicken.
I’m saving the bones. There’s going to be a wonderful soup for Christmas, yes there is.
‘Tis the season to drink eggnog
December 23, 2007
I used to love store-bought eggnog, when I was a kid. I’m hard-pressed to understand why, at this point. Weird, glutinous stuff. It bears little resemblance to the real thing although, then again, you’re liable to get arrested for serving the real thing to kids.
The eggnog I make is quite simple. It’s based on an old James Beard recipe.
The day in food
December 23, 2007
Let’s start with yesterday, actually. I’d been running around a bit, doing some last-minute mailing. Got it all done with only a serious amount of difficulty– the main post office, here, isn’t open on Saturdays, if you can imagine that. A branch office is, but there’s a lot of construction going on (due to the light-rail boondoggle), so it’s a bit hard to get anywhere… plus, they removed the handy “Post Office” sign at the entrance, so I passed it a few times. Anyway…
I was hungry.
Justice: a comedy
December 19, 2007
I ran across a picture of The Honourable Justice Trevor John Riley, this morning. I must share it with you.
Retrospectacle … not the Thomas Dolby album
December 11, 2007
It’s been, oh, a year or so since I’ve been blogging. I don’t keep much track. I do watch the stats, out of vanity, but they’re pretty terrible. That’s ok. It’s a weird and irregular little blog, tied to my own life. I’m weird and irregular, too. I don’t expect a wide audience.
I am somewhat bemused to watch the searches that find me. Many of them are just so far off… but hey, maybe some will find what they’re looking for.
The number one boss man
December 11, 2007
I’ve posted a few times, before, about Marguerite. She was nuts, and a sweet woman, and a bum, and an alcoholic. She had unexpected talents, and unexpected quirks, and her children left her living in the woods, in our local suburban community.
I’ve never met her children. I don’t know how she related to them. Perhaps it’s my mistake but, I loathe them all, regardless. I’m sure they have their own stories. They had best be very good, to make up for leaving their own mother to live in the woods.
It’s a hazy shade of winter
December 10, 2007
What have we got to say, today? A little of this, a little of that. No flames, I think. I like a good rant as much as anyone, or perhaps a bit more, but they’re a seasoning. So much, and no more than that.
I’ve rambled through a great many blogs, lately, in the search for new information. Entertainment. I’ll readily settle for good comedy, although what I want is, actually, brains. News is good, but there’s awfully little news out there, oddly enough. Very little that is unexpected, or odd, or new, by way of news.
Mental cleanser
December 8, 2007
This is still up… and it’s still a riot.
I think my commentary on it, last time around, was a bit subtle. Folks, this is not a serious flick, and there is only enough truth to it to make it funnier, and no more than that.
A fool for the New York Times
December 8, 2007
A recent blathering article from the New York Times, citing a University of Washington study, claims that eating “junk food” gets you an average of $1.76 per 1,000 calories, whereas “low-energy but nutritious foods” cost $18.16 per 1,000 calories.
My rebuttal? Two words. Bull Shit.
Oh, well, now… of course I’m going to follow up on that. Honestly, though, what appalling gibberish. Who’s paying these “scientists”? Follow the money.
