It’s a wrap
March 26, 2009
It appears that I’ll be taking off to stay with my Dad in the immediate future. The prospect of leaving my cozy apartment and wonderful Phoenix does not thrill but, life is ever an adventure. It seems I’ve just hit an exciting new episode.
It may be a bit before I’m back on the ‘Net.
Point of excitement
March 26, 2009
Due to financial difficulties and a bit of unexpected adventures involving my dear old Dad, I may be offline a bit. Pray excuse me.
Libertarian candidate commits seppuku
July 8, 2008
The Libertarian candidate for U.S. President, this year, is Bob Barr. A former Republican Congressman, Mr. Barr picked up the Libertarian Party nomination through slick (and slimy) last-minute deals. The folks in the LP who are eager to win at any cost were delighted, of course. He’s certainly a politician. Libertarian, no.
Dig his press release:
Today, as we celebrate our freedom and independence, we should stop and give thanks to God for the life and work of Jesse Helms. As a nation we are stronger and the world is freer for his commitment to liberty.
Mother of God.
A blog before its time
June 1, 2008
This is something else, really. It’s a long rant from Mark Twain, not so different from a good blog entry. It involves flames, religion, politics, social criticism and thinking about thinking. I love it. Try it on for size.
Global warming gibberish
May 17, 2008
I’ve been reading more news reports about “due to global warming, such-and-such problems are occurring.”
For reference, people? Even if you believe in global warming, which takes a breathtaking lack of recollection of all the previous ecological panics– the most severe of the alleged consequences is on the order of an additional 0.01 degrees per year. We aren’t going to see any noticeable effect, whatsoever, from this horrific disaster for, oh, the next millenium or so.
In that respect, it’s a lot more handy than the predictions of mass starvation, overpopulation, running out of oil and iron and copper and tin, and all the other crazed fears that were expected to put an end to civilization by the year 2000. “Global warming” is like terrorism– it’s an empty threat that we can continue to panic about for the rest of our natural lives. Enjoy, enjoy.
LCD displays…
April 27, 2008
…are wonderful. Relatively thin, relatively lightweight, and a good one has just so fine resolution with an appropriate graphics card.
They take less power than those old CRT monsters, too, but… if you’re expecting them not to put out a lot of heat, you’ll be surprised. The big ones do run very hot. That’s not an advantage, in Arizona.
It’s been said that screen-savers are obsolete, because modern monitors don’t tend to “burn in”. Don’t believe it. My big ol’ LCD beauty does suffer from a bit of that burn-in. Keep your screen-saver, or let the monitor time out and go dark if you’re not at the keyboard.
Easily the most exciting thing about cooking
April 7, 2008
…is making your own recipes. A long time ago, it was, I was terrible at it. There are many things that just don’t combine well, and making a few ingredients into a large mess doesn’t make the mess more palatable.
Cheap fish. I find that onions and cilantro go a long way. Cilantro’s a bit of an acquired taste, though. Consider parsley as an alternative. I wish I’d known that a long time ago.
The Cheap Diet, Day 5

Still catching up on the diet posts… day five is running under budget, as always. $2.57 for 1,498 calories.
Details follow.
The Cheap Diet, Day 4
June 16, 2007
No, I didn’t drop the diet. I’ve just been too lazy to tot up and post the results. Looking up nutritional data, running calculations, double-checking my work– why, it is work, isn’t it? The horror! The horror! So, where we was. Let’s see. Oh yes.
Coming a bit closer to the limits, on day four, we run up a total of 1,870 calories for $2.91. Details follow.
